This year I really went to visit cemeteries for the first time very much on purpose, everywhere I went.
I visited a friend in formerly German Stettin, now Polish but I never managed to spell the name correctly. Speaking is easy, “scheschien” (German pronounciation).
Today I am reading that the Cmentarz Centraly (Zentralfriedhof) is the largest in Poland, and the third largest in Europe!
And that it was designed after my hometown cemetery Ohlsdorf – also a beautiful park cemetery, which I still have to specially go to for taking new photos to present it here.
It is a German cemetery. It was. Walking along the ample paths I recognizes something unusual:
There are many gravestones with the birthdates on – but no death marked.
Due to WWII, when German inhabitants left Stettin.
There are Russian names, Polish names too. Made me very sad thinking about how the war affected the people, seeing it at the cemetery. Germans died, fled, were moved, young Russian soldiers died, Polish people were forced to move here. Crazy what men (!) do on earth. Still.
Beautiful well kept large entrance
Leading into a beautiful park
Okay, so they suggest a walking route. Great, that´s what I am gonna do, I have no rush at all today.
(Sorry, I only took photos of the German comments. Actually there aren´t any in English.)
I immediately fell in love with these large glass candle light holders.
That looks so very beautiful to me!
And photos, which I love so much and want for Germany too. Or at least for my family.
